Dr Ajayi won an ALBA-FKNE-YIBRO diversity grants for the FENS 2020 Virtual Forum

Dr. Ajayi was selected to benefit from an ALBA-FKNE-YIBRO grant to access the FENS 2020 Virtual Forum holding from 11 to 15 July 2020. This was announced by the ALBA Office on behalf of the ALBA Network, the FENS Kavli Network of Excellence (FKNE), the Young IBRO Committee (YIBRO) and their partners FENS, IBRO, the Federación Latinoamericana de Neurociencias y el Caribe (FALAN), the Federation of Asian-Oceanian Neuroscience Societies (FAONS), and the Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA) following his application for grants worth € 400, made available for eligible early-career scientists to attend the 12th FENS Forum organized by the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) and the British Neuroscience Association (BNA).

But for the CoVID-19 pandemic, the FENS2020 Forum was meant to hold in Glasgow. Nevertheless, the FENS Forum will be filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and network:

  • A rich and cutting-edge programme on the front lines of neuroscience
  • Stimulating satellite and networking events to develop his career and expand his network
  • Exciting professional development activities to ramp up his skills, including the pre-Forum Introductory Courses and the Young Investigator Training Programme (worth €1000, courtesy of IBRO-PERC to help cover costs of a visit to work in a UK host laboratory for 2-3 weeks preceding the FENS2020 Forum visit - but has been canceled for this year)

Having studied natural products, their effects on the mitochondrial membrane permeabilization of organs in type 2 diabetic rats, on the brain, and liver of uni-nephrectomized, as well as ovariectomized insulin-resistant rats, and having also screened some for antileishmanial properties against Leishmania amazonensis for topical wound healing of cutaneous lesions, he hopes that this grant will give him the opportunity to fuel his drive for brain research as he is beginning to expand his research study of infectious parasitic disease comorbidity with diabetes complications to the influence on inflammation in the brain by the ability of the parasite to cross the blood-brain barrier, focusing on the Leishmania species. Listening to experts speak, asking questions, and interacting with his peers will also be a great benefit.
